SOAP Journal 04-03-2008 (Psalm 91:3-7)

Scripture:

Psalm 91:3-7 he will certainly rescue you from the snare of the hunter and from the destructive plague. He will shelter you with his wings; you will find safety under his wings. His faithfulness is like a shield or a protective wall. You need not fear the terrors of the night, the arrow that flies by day, the plague that comes in the darkness, or the disease that comes at noon. Though a thousand may fall beside you, and a multitude on your right side, it will not reach you.

Observation:

The promise of protection and deliverance is extensive. The snare (a picture of temptation), the plague (pestilence and disease) are things the righteous are rescued from. God's protection is testimony to His faithfulness. Attacks by night or day, dark plague or noonday disease are bypass the faithful believer. The thousand falling all around him testifies to the true destruction of the things that threaten, but "it will not reach you" states God's special, protective, distinctive shelter for His own.

Application:

These are all fearful things and the psalmist's words are clearly to dispell fear. It's not that trouble does NOT befall the righteous person, it's that it is not to scare us. Even in that (not in this passage), God's hand sustains and raises up His children. So we ARE special in His sight and under His protecting hand. We ARE specially protected and delivered - count on it.

Prayer:

Father, I need to own this, need to know that no matter what I go through You have promised my protection and deliverance. And truly, it is only fear that keeps me from the victory in the midst of those times. Grant that I could have faith to see Your hand to save. In Jesus' name. Amen.
